8. Frequently Asked Questions

The course begins morning of October 22nd, 2016. Check in at the ashram is October 21st, 2016 starting at 1:00pm. You should fly into New Delhi no later than October 20th, 2016, as you will need to travel to Rishikesh to get there for check in on the 21st. We highly suggest arriving to India two or three days in advance of the course beginning. This would be helpful in recovering and resting from jet lag before the course begins.

In order to arrive to the course on time, you must leave New Delhi by early morning on October 21st, 2016. You will need to allow yourself the travel time to get from New Delhi to Rishikesh.

If you arrive early and do not want to stay in New Delhi, you could travel on to Rishikesh.

To book a room earlier than the check-in date please go to: www.parmarth.org/reservations/ to complete the online booking. Also, please note "Kundalini Training - Golden Bridge" in the ‘Purpose’ field for identification of our group.

You should receive a response within 7 days. If you do not receive a response within 7 days, please email the ashram at reservations@parmarth.com to follow up.

If you will be arriving earlier than the training registration day please arrange your own accommodations through the ashram. Please make sure to still come to registration for the course so we may give you your course materials and place you in your room. Golden Bridge is responsible for your accommodations beginning on October 21st, 2016. If you are arriving to Rishikesh earlier than October 21st, you will be responsible for your accommodations prior to October 21st.

Recommended hotels in New Delhi:

You must have a valid passport and a visa to travel to India. We suggest the 6 month Tourist visa.  Please contact the Indian consulate in your country for visa information. In the USA go to http://indiavisa.travisaoutsourcing.com

Frequently Asked Questions: Location

Q: I just noticed that the room & board fee is based on double-occupancy. What if I really want a room by myself?
A: A single room will be an additional cost (price for this to come). Please be sure to let Sat Puran (satpuran@goldenbridgeyoga.com) know as soon as possible if you need this accommodation. Please note that single rooms are limited and unless paid for in advance, are not guaranteed.

Q: What is the ashram lodging like?
A: Ashram living is very, very simple living. Each room has it’s own bathroom, but hot water can be sporadic so you might want to practice taking cold showers before you come. Some people like to bring their own sheets and a pillow from home. It's not necessary, but it's nice to have a touch of home away from home. There is also a lovely fabric store near the ashram that sells bed sheets and towels. The ashram provides basic sheets and towels but you are welcome to bring your own.

**Please remember, the ashram is not a hotel - there are no amenities and there is no maid service to clean every day. Keeping your room tidy will be your responsibility. It`s a simple, meditative living experience.

Q: Is the food and water clean?
A: Drink only bottled water while in India. It is readily available. Do not drink water out of any tap. We suggest using bottled water to brush your teeth. The ashram does have a water filter system that can be pointed out to you when you arrive.

Q: What kind of food will there be at the ashram?
A: We will serve fresh vegetarian Indian food. A typical breakfast includes yogi tea (with or without milk), oatmeal, yogurt and fruit. Lunch and dinner are a vegetable subji (mix), fresh mixed vegetable salad, chapatis, rice and dahl. The food is vegetarian with many vegan options.

If you have specific dietary requirements, such as a vegan or wheat-free diet, you can bring snacks with you. We can also direct you to many healthy eateries and safe vegetable and fruit stands outside the ashram once we are in India. As long as you buy fruit that has a peel it will be fine to eat. Many vegans have traveled with us to India and have had no problem finding delicious food to eat.

Q: Will my cell phone work? Is there Internet? How can I call home?
A: Please check with your carrier for your international options. You may also be able to buy a SIM card for your cell phone that will allow you to call internationally. Additionally, there are plenty of phone offices in India with inexpensive rates if you choose not to bring a cell phone. In Rishikesh there are Internet cafes close to the Ashram where you can use Skype or similar programs. Just know that Internet service in India can be very slow.

Q: How should I dress once in India?
A: Modestly and with respect to the culture.

For women, do not wear clothes that are tight, transparent or show too much skin or underarms. This means no tank tops, halters or short t-shirts. We also discourage wearing jeans or slacks. Instead wear loose fitting, graceful clothes such as long skirts and Indian kirtas. This is to not only to show respect for the culture but so that you don`t draw unwanted attention to yourself. Once in India there are many shops where you can purchase beautiful and inexpensive clothing to wear and to do yoga in.

For men we suggest khaki or linen type pants with an Indian kirta shirts (no tank tops). Because you'll be doing Kundalini Yoga every day, we recommend white or light colored clothing. Please bring a head covering for the yoga and meditation classes.

Frequently Asked Questions: Money

Q. How much money should I take with me?
A: That`s entirely up to you and how much you want to buy. Things in India are much more inexpensive than they are in the US or Europe so your dollar goes pretty far. Travelers checks are harder to exchange in India then cash, so we recommend bringing cash and a money belt. ATMs are available in Rishikesh and in close proximity to the ashram. Most stores take credit cards, but it`s cash only at the markets. It’s always a good idea to exchange some money when you arrive to the New Delhi airport.

Q: What about tipping?
A: We do not tip any staff during our stay at the Ashram in Rishikesh. Rather, we leave a collective group tip at the end of our stay, which the staff divides between them.

In addition, if you use porters to assist you with your luggage, plan on $1/piece of luggage each time you use them. For taxis within New Delhi count on $1-$2/tip. Rishikesh is small and you will have no need to use a taxi. Anywhere you need to go you can walk to.

Q: What is the currency and how can I exchange my dollars?
A: The currency in India is the rupee. There is money exchange in the New Delhi airport. When you fly into New Delhi, exchange some money into rupees at the airport. You can easily walk to places in Rishikesh to exchange money. The rupee is not exchangeable outside of India so however much money you exchange into rupees, know that you must either spend it or exchange it back before leaving the country.

Frequently Asked Questions: Travel To and Within India

Q: Do you have recommendations for booking my flight?
A: There are many options for finding a flight. It all depends on where you're flying out from. The Internet is your best source to explore your options. A couple of sites that may prove helpful are www.cheaptickets.com and www.expedia.com. You may also wish to use a travel agent to assist you in booking your flight.

Q: Do I need a passport?
A: Yes. Your passport must be valid for the dates of your trip. If you do not have a passport please allow adequate time to get one. For information on how to apply for a passport visit www.travel.state.gov. If you live outside of the U.S. you can check with your local passport office. You will not be allowed to board a plane leaving the country without a passport.

Q: Do I need a visa for India?
A: Yes, you will need a tourist visa to travel to India. We suggest a 6 month or 10 year visa, whichever makes more sense for your future travel needs. You must apply for a TOURIST VISA. In the USA for information on applying for a visa go to http://indiavisa.travisaoutsourcing.com. In other countries, please check with your Indian Consulate. You will not be allowed to board a plane bound for India without a valid Indian visa.

Other Resources:

There is an online service through the Indian Government (www.indiavisaonline.org.in/faq/how-india-visa-works) that may be useful for US citizens for getting your visa upon arrival at the airport.

Depending on what country you are from you may also be able to get a visa upon arrival to the airport: https://e-indiagency.com

If you have questions on getting your Tourist Visa for India you may also  contact your region's Indian Consulate.

Q: How do I get from New Delhi to Rishikesh and back?
A: You can fly from New Delhi to Deradhun (we recommend Spice or Jet Air Airlines) and take a taxi to Rishikesh. A taxi to the ashram from the airport should cost around $20 USD or 1000 Rupees (this is an approximate price). Another option is to take a train from New Delhi to Haridwar. The train leaves from New Delhi (Station Code NDLS) and goes to Haridwar (Station Code HW), taking 4.5 hours. For more information, please see the Indian Rail website. We suggest booking your seat in the First Class car section. You will then take a taxi or car service from the train station to the ashram.

Q: Any suggestions for a healthy flight?
A: Since the flight is so long we do recommend drinking plenty of water, at least 8 ounces per hour. Drinking caffeinated beverages is not recommended. If you want a special meal remember to order in advance with your airline. Vitamin C or Electrolyte packets are helpful in fortifying your immune system during the flight. Snacks of fruits and nuts will help too. When not sleeping or watching movies, take regular breaks to get up, walk around and stretch.

Q. What should I pack?
A: Once you register you will be provided with a suggested packing list. We suggest you bring one large suitcase or duffle as checked luggage and one small bag or knapsack as your carry on. Bring an empty duffle packed into your suitcase to bring home your purchases. Don’t over pack!

Remember, airlines are imposing stricter guidelines for luggage and weight. Please check with your airlines to see what their requirements are. Make sure the luggage you bring is luggage you can handle carrying. We recommend a bag with wheels for easier carrying.

Q: Do I need vaccinations?
A: There are no required vaccinations for travel in North India. We suggest you consult with your doctor if you are concerned about this issue, and do whatever makes you feel comfortable. The staff of Golden Bridge that has traveled to India for our trainings usually do not get vaccinations; but again, this is your individual choice. There are many websites that explain the vaccinations. Please do what feels comfortable for you.

Q: What about supplements and medicines?
A: Once you register you will be sent a list of recommended supplements and suggestions to stay healthy during your time in India. Whatever prescription medications you are required to take at home, please continue to take them while in India.
